Banders Round up
I banded the attached
male Rufous Whistler at home on Sunday 2nd Aug which appears
to be an anomalous bird when compared to the Banders Guide. The gape is
a very pronounced yellow i.e. indicating juvenile status while at the
same time showing the distinct male black upper breast band. The Guide
indicates or infers the black band does not appear until >3 years and
the yellow gape and pale horn upper/lower mandible base are the traits
of a juvenile or year 1 bird. There was no streaking on the upper or
lower breast area. I would like to hear your views on the age of this
bird.
