Finches of the East Kimberley

Location: within a 50km radius of Wyndham, WA

Supervising Bander: Jan Lewis

Contact telephone number: 08 91 922 995

Postal address:   PO Box 2605, Broome, WA  6725

Aims: The aim of this project is to acquire morphometric, moult and breeding data on species of finches and honeyeaters for which little data are currently available from the northern Kimberley.

Site Description:   The project focuses on 3 main areas:

  1. The  King River Road area east of the King River crossing
  2. The townsite of Wyndham
  3. The Parry Creek area from Telegraph Hole to Parry Creek floodplain

Other Information:  Juvenile finches are also fitted with a colour band, 3 different colours being used each year according to location caught.  This is intended to provide information on movement and survival of cohorts of juveniles.

Anyone sighting a Star Finch with a colour band in the Wyndham area should note the colour of the band, and the date and location of the sighting, preferably with a GPS, and report that sighting to Jan Lewis on jan.lewis@westnet.com.au

Some of the banding and resighting work being undertaken is supported by students from Macquarie University who are studying Gouldian and Long-tailed Finches in the vicinity.

My next visit to the site will be in early 2010.
