Aims: The project has two main objectives: to study the short-term and
long-term movements of as many individuals as possible, and to investigate the
genetic variation within the population.
Short-term movements include those during nesting and their study will
provide data on size of the breeding territory, habitat preferences, and other
information about their breeding ecology will be collected.
Long-term movements are movements monitored over periods of 24 months or
longer. To achieve this, adult females will be fitted with a small solar-powered
satellite transmitter; males are considered to be too light and not capable of
carrying a satellite transmitter. Seasonal movements and dispersal, fidelity to
a breeding site or area, preferred non-breeding habitat, dependence on
artificial water sources for hunting, and other issues of the Grey Falcon's
ecology are expected outcomes.
The project will also investigate genetic variation residing within the
population as a whole. This can be used as an indication of the genetic
"robustness" of the species, i.e. the genetic potential of the species
to respond to selective pressure. A low variation may mean that the species has
a limited potential to adapt to environmental changes and is vulnerable.
Site Description: Arid and semi-arid inland of mainland Australia.
