Dead Bird reveals it’s age – An Interesting Find by Gwen Goodreid

On 1 June 2009, a Yellow-rumped Thornbill Acanthiza chrysorrhoa was found by Jackie Myers on her property at East Nannup Rd (Latitude 34deg 0min Osec S: Longitude 115deg 46min 0sec E), adjacent to the Goodreid property.

On it’s leg was band number 017-52051, a Yellow-rumped Thornbill originally banded on 28 April 1996, aged 1+ and subsequently retrapped on 14 November 2001, when it was aged at 6+ and sexed as Female on Cloaca.

Information regarding the Dead Recovery (DR) was forwarded to the ABBBS.

The report received was as follows:

”The time between banding and recovery is 13 years 1 month 4 days. The bird had moved a distance of 0km with a bearing of 0 degrees.”

Subsequent information indicated that on 1/06/09, it was the oldest record in Australia, exceeding the previous record of a Yellow-rumped Thornbill recorded in NSW on 23/10/1967 aged 9 years 6 months.
